Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third child of the family. Her father, a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to support the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. After only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on the path she chose to pursue. When she was in New York she was hired to do a photo shoot for a magazine about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. While in New York, she volunteered in a bar as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. There she earned a living in the ushering industry during the day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. She was a drama student at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
